JPRD tells upcoming programs

The Jefferson park and recreation department is accepting registrations for three upcoming programs.

Soccer for children 4 or 5 years old (as of July 31, 2014) will begin April 13. U6 soccer will meet Mondays from 5:30 to 6:30 pm at Kelso Park. Children will learn the basics of soccer through drills and games. Shin guards are mandatory. Jerseys will be provided, to be returned to JPRD at the end of the season. Cost is $20. The second session of tae kwon do will begin Sunday, April 19, and run through June 21 (no class on May 24). The kinder group (ages 4-7) will meet from 2 to 2:45 pm, juniors (ages 8-16) will meet from 3 to 4 pm, and adults will meet from 4:15 to 5:15 pm.

The kinder and junior groups will learn discipline, respect, confidence, and the basic self-defense principles of martial arts. Adults will explore various arts, tactics and traditional weapons in a tae kwon do centered class.

Instructor is Levi Horsely. Horsely is a first degree black belt in tae kwon do and black belt in bando ryu karate. He is an assistant instructor in muy thai (thai boxing) and jeet kune do. Tumbling classes with Nicole Friess-Schilling and Jamie Leggitt will be Saturdays, May 2 through May 30. Tumbling I (beginners pre-K through first grade) will learn basic floor tumbling skills and increase flexibility and coordination. Tumbling II (intermediate and advance tumblers) will learn and master basic floor skills with progression based on individual ability. Students will also work on the balance beam, springboard and single bar.

Tumbling I will meet from 10 to 10:30 am and Tumbling II will meet from 10:30 to 11:15. The registration fee is $25 for Tumbling I and $30 for Tumbling II. Class size is limited; register early. For a registration form, click here: Tumbling
